June 18th. is also the date for the “Three Rivers Race” – a new departure which looks like becoming the Le Mans of the local yacht racing scene. The idea of an all-night race with navigation lights has been in several minds for some time, but it cropped up again during the winter when an anonymous donor offered a trophy for a race which would demand a little more in seamanship than the usual dice around the buoys.
The final details have still to be worked out, but at present it appears that the boats will leave Horning at 3 p.m., travel down the Bure to the mouth of the Ant, make a short detour to Ludham Bridge, then up the Thurne to Hickling Broad, where HBSV volunteers have offered to man a late check-point, back down the Thurne and on to Acle Bridge. The turning mark will be near Stokesby and the fastest boats should be back at Horning between three and four in the morning.
